The Skinny On The Stinky: What I Learned From Road-Testing Natural Deodorants

Natural deodorants have been a tough sell for me, even as a self professed green beauty junkie there was something about giving up the security of my AP that didn't sit well.  I would sneak a conventional stick into my yoga studio, giving my pits a quick swipe on the DL post-practice, hoping some of the braver yogis didn't notice.  But in researching my article on Best Natural Deodorants for Huff Post, I had a professional excuse to risk a little stinky, and dove in to the test drive willing to give it my all.  I spent about 2 weeks testing various brands and products, and the main finding for me was that natural deodorant is SO WORTH IT!  I feel so much better knowing what I'm rolling, swiping, or spraying on in the morning is good for me.

Keep in mind however, you WILL SWEAT!  At first this felt SO WIERD! Sweat where you don't usually sweat feels odd to say the least, and it has deterred me from grey T-shirts on hot days and silky fabrics when it's humid out.  I haven't quite figured out how to remedy this concern - natural deodorant does not stop you from sweating so the moisture thing is a challenge, BUT the deodorants I tried all stop bacteria, so as far as I know (and I did ask around!), NO ODOUR!  Having said this, several people told me they had issue with ND and odour, I think different people's body chemistry reacts differently.  Some people reported having a detox period where they were super stinky as their bodies adjusted.  I didn't notice this, but I think it's definitely something to be prepared for.

Of the brands I tried, some seemed to last the whole day, while others felt better being reapplied.  Scents that I tried varied from a stunning palo santo & blood orange to pretty vanillas and lilacs, or a neutral unscented, again when it comes to perfume (or lack thereof) I think it comes down to personal taste.  Worth noting, if you're a speedy shaver like I am, some brands were irritating on freshly shaven skin, so shaving and applying carefully were helpful here.  Prices also varied, but there was ample selection at the affordable end of the scale.  All in all, such a positive experience that my body is seemingly very happy about.  Goal is to stick with the all-natural deodorants, and about a month in, so far so good!
