I tried Shampoo & Conditioner Bars and here's what I found...
Admittedly I love Green Beauty as much as the next gal, but when it comes to natural shampoos & conditioners I've had my struggles. Up until recently I had been stashing a set of conventional bottles in my shower for shoots and days when, well I just wanted really clean hair; I loved the thought of the eco stuff, but it just wasn't holding up.
That is until recently, when I put a handful of kick-ass brands to the test on assignment for Huff Post (read my jubilant findings here), and realized that good green brands that could clean and condition my hair were in fact out there! What's more, amongst the best of the best, I had the chance to try a couple of bar cleansers and was formidably impressed.
How much lather could a bar soap create I wondered? Well let me tell you, a lot, just the right amount in fact! The bar soap is applied almost directly to the scalp (you rub it into wet hair at the roots) and so it makes sense that it cleanses and balances where it is needed most. I applied the conditioner to wet ends as I would conventionally and voila... healthy, clean and moisturized hair.
Both the bars I tried came with tins which I had to remember to remove from the shower and dry off so they wouldn't rust. The bars dry out quickly and are ready to go again in a pinch.
As I can't seem to get the endless images of plastic particles swirling around in the oceans out of my head, no packaging seems like a most excellent idea when it comes to beauty, particularly if the product works as well as the couple that I tried did. Both Unwrapped Life and Lush use natural ingredients for their bars, and I'm also going to try Earth Luxe, another eco brand when I get the chance.
