How To Find Balance In Your Busy Life - The Mom Edition

I often get asked how I manage the juggle of motherhood and truthfully it’s a constant journey filled with readjustments, re-evaluations, setbacks and successes. Setting a daily intention to work towards that place where you feel as balanced as possible can be helpful. Some days you might come close - other days not so much, but doing your best not to pass judgement when you miss the mark is a biggie. Here’s how I do my best to navigate the ebb and flow.

  1. Try A Little Tenderness

    In otherwords be nice - to yourself! When the voice in your head tries to give you grief for a misstep, silence it with loving kindness instead - no need to pour on the #momguilt because the train was delayed and you’re running late for soccer practice. Take a beat and breathe - remind yourself of a handful of small daily accomplishments - acknowledge that there’s nothing you can do in that moment to change the circumstances, but you can control how you choose to react.

  2. See Through The Smoke And Mirrors

    Can we talk about comparison for a moment? With social media now a permanent fixture in our lives it can be tough not to compare ourselves to perfectly filtered versions of our peers. I’ll let you in on a little secret - most of this is smoke and mirrors - yes the content can be authentic (I know this is something I personally strive for), but it doesn’t mean just out of the shot of a pretty kitchen is a completely destroyed living room full of the very same legos you trip over on the daily. I can say this with confidence as that’s precisely how I manage to photograph our small living space - sure I’ll shoot a cozy corner but I am purposefully avoiding our mountainous piles of laundry!

  3. Have Boundaries.

    This is a big one and can be a challenge for a lot of us, but boundaries, or as I think in this case knowing when to say no, is a key component to finding balance. Take for example the classic school bake sale. I like to bake and I think it’s important to support the school. When I can, I’ll make a batch of something sweet for my son to take in. If I have enough time I’ll bake from scratch, less time it’s muffins from a box, no time I send my LO in with a couple of bucks to support as a customer. Knowing when to say no, or as I like to put it saying - I can’t do that but here’s what I can do - helps me find balance between taking care of everyone else and attending to my own needs.
